At Archimedean Schools, we believe that education is not only about knowledge—but about character, reasoning, and thoughtful engagement with the world. One of the programs that best reflects this mission is our Ethics Bowl program, where students explore complex moral questions through respectful dialogue, critical thinking, and philosophical inquiry.
Through the National High School Ethics Bowl involving more than 550 teams nationwide, Archimedean students learn how to think carefully, listen generously, and engage in disagreement with intellectual rigor and empathy—skills that prepare them not only for competitions, but for life itself.
What Is Ethics, and the Archimedean Ethics Bowl?
Ethics is the study of how we determine right from wrong and how we make moral decisions in real-world situations.
At Archimedean, our vision is to cultivate students who think deeply, speak thoughtfully, and approach moral questions with clarity, responsibility, and empathy.
During the 2018–2019 academic year, the Ethics Bowl began as a student club and continues to run in this capacity today. Students voluntarily dedicate personal time to:
- Collaborative preparation
- Case analysis
- Group discussions
- Practice rounds
The program has been guided by a single, long-standing faculty coach, Ms. Liset Torres, whose consistent mentorship has ensured continuity, growth, and excellence.
In recent years, broader faculty involvement has strengthened the program, including support from Mr. Solis and Mr. Towner, as well as the introduction of Ethics Olympiad, a new AMC elective expanding ethics-based learning opportunities.
Ethics and Philosophy: A Natural Connection
Students are introduced to philosophical thinking as early as 5th grade, developing critical reasoning, structured argumentation, and reflective thinking. In 9th grade, the Ethics course strengthens this foundation by helping students justify and analyze moral positions.
In the National High School Ethics Bowl, students do not debate to defeat an opponent. Instead, they engage in thoughtful discussions of contemporary ethical dilemmas—working collaboratively to analyze complex issues, consider multiple perspectives, and refine their moral reasoning.
