Archimedean School Honored for Exceptional Academic Achievement
When a school in the US receives the honor of being recognized as a National Blue Ribbon School, it is a celebration of academic achievement as well as diversity. Archimedean Upper Conservatory has won this great honor for 2018,receiving the prestigious award at a Washington D.C. ceremony on November 7th. Its director, Demetrios Demopoulos,was also awarded the prestigious 2018 Terrel H. Bell Award for Outstanding School Leadership at the same ceremony.
Miami, Florida, school was chosen as the best out of the approximately 130,000 schools in the country for the year 2018. Archimedean is a public school that focuses on mathematics and the Greek language as part of an academically-balanced college preparatory program. The Blue Ribbon School award system takes into consideration years of student data and results when honoring an institution.

In a recorded message to the honorees, US Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos highlighted the importance of this recognition, saying: “We recognize and honor your important work in preparing students for successful careers and meaningful lives. Other distinctions the school, its staff, and pupils have achieved are ranking consistently among the top three 9-12 public schools in the state by the Florida Department of Education and among the “Top 50 Best” and “Top 30 Most-Challenging High Schools” in the country by the U.S. News & World Report and The Washington Post, respectively.
Behind this well-respected and recognized institution, there is a head director who also stands out from the crowd and was honored with the 2018 Terrel H. Bell Award. Demetrios Demopoulos received the Award for Outstanding School Leadership at the recognition ceremony and was lauded by Secretary DeVos, who said in her remarks: “We know strong school leadership is a driving force behind ensuring students and teachers succeed.”

Demopoulos was one out of 11 school leaders throughout the country who was honored as an exceptional leader. Areas the principals were judged on included implementing a vision, having high expectations, a collaborative leadership style, and having a passion for educating youth.
In the words of Director Demopoulos, “Archimedean, from its inception, set out to open for students doors that traditionally have been shut. Every child deserves the best quality of education in order to dream the biggest dreams and then have the skill set needed to make those dreams come true!”
Archimedean Upper Conservatory becomes the third Archimedean school to be recognized for its academic excellence. Archimedean Middle Conservatory and Archimedean Academy were also honored as National Blue Ribbon schools in 2011.
