AAUC wins 2012 South Florida History Bowl Championship – AUC Students advance to Nationals in History Bee and Geography Challenge

On Saturday, November 10th, 2012, AUC hosted for the very first time the South Florida Regional National History Bee and Bowl Competitions. 24 teams (16 Varsity, 8 JV) from various local high schools including Ransom Everglades, Chaminade Madonna, Cypress Bay, Western, Coral Springs, and Princeton Christian, competed in a day filled with exciting matches.

Both the AUC varsity and junior varsity teams won the competition by defeating last year’s state champions Ransom Everglades in nail-biting matches. Both teams advanced to the nationals that will take place on April 27-28, 2013 in Washington, DC. The members of the varsity team are: Isaac Barreto, Alexandros Christodoulou-Rubalcava, Shiva Kangeyan, Raymond Maspons, Aditya Shetty, and Gustavo Valle. The members of the junior varsity team are: Vaidya Govindarajan, Yeorgia Kafkoulis, Emily Utset, and Sean White.

AUC students also did well in the National History Bee Competition. The following students advanced to the nationals of the History Bee Competition: Shiva Kangeyan (Varsity, 2nd round Finalist), Aditya Shetty (Varsity), Yeorgia Kafkoulis (JV, Finalist), and Vaidya Govindarajan. (JV).

On the same day, regional qualifying for the US Geography Challenge took place at AUC. The USGC is intended to select a team of four US students at the National Championships of the United States Geography Challenge on Friday, April 26, 2013, in Arlington, VA to compete in the 2013 International Geography Olympiad which will be held from July 30-August 5, 2013 in Kyoto, Japan. Both Shiva Kangeyan, who received the top score on the qualifying exam (91), and Aditya Shetty will compete for a chance to become a member of the inaugural American team.
